Alaska State Contractor License Regulations
Minimize

Building contractors in the State of Alaska are required to register with the Department of Community and Economic Development. To inquire about whether or not a contractor is licensed contact Regulation of Construction Contractors, or call (907) 465-2546 or (907) 465-3035. A general contractors license does not allow contractors to work, or bid on privately owned structures unless it is for alteration and the cost is less than 25% of the value of the entire structure. Residential General Contractors have to undertake quite a bit more in order to work on residential construction.  You must complete the Alaska Craftsman Home Program, or a post-secondary course in Arctic engineering, or equivalents. The course must be done within two years before application for a license is made. The ACHP is a non for profit organization which holds workshops around the state, click here to contact, or call (907) 258-2247 / (800) 699-9276 in Alaska. The next step is to get an Endorsement Application for Residential Construction from Department of Community and Economic Development, you may also call (907) 465-3035. You will also need to apply for business license, you may contact Business Licensing Section, or call (907) 465-2550. There is a $200 non refundable fee for a business license, it is good for two calendar years. Out of state corporations must acquire a Certificate of Authority to do business from the Alaska Secretary of State. Contact Corporations Section,  or call (907) 465-2530 to obtain an application.  In requesting bids and awarding construction contracts under chapter AS 44.83.920  the authority may not require a contractor to obtain workers' compensation, general liability, or other required insurance from a particular insurer, agent, or broker and may not agree to provide insurance to a contractor who is awarded a construction contract. For more information concerning workers' compensation insurance please call 1-907-465-2790, contact by mail at PO Box 115512
